The State of Texas maintains a web site where you can check to determine whether the corporate name that you desire is available. However, you must first subscribe to the online service. If you are only forming a single corporation, registration for the online service is probably not practical. The Secretary of State's computer database may be accessed over the Internet by subscribing to Secretary of State Direct Access (SOSDA). You can check name availability for free over the telephone by calling (512) 463-5555 between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Central Time, Monday through Friday

Business entity information, but not name availability, is also available at 1-(900)-740-2662 between the hours of 7:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday, and 7:00 A.M. through 6:00 P.M. on Friday, for a fee of $3.00 per call.

Checking the corporate name in advance is necessary and will save you a lot of time. If you do not check first, your incorporation papers will be returned to you if there is a conflicting name and you will need to start over again from scratch.
